Yoga & Astrology

Yoga & Astrology are two modalities that have had a huge impact on my life. Although they stem from different lineages, for me, they are inexplicably linked. Both teach us to turn inwards, to understand ourselves and to explore meaning, developing awareness of our habits, our tendencies, our natures. They’re both about bringing all of the parts of ourselves to the surface; to accept, to love and to eventually bring them into a place of balance so that we can find peace and then extend that peace outwards.

I’ve been a fan of astrology since I was a young teenager. I struggled a lot during those years, as many of us do. I had a lovely home and family life, but I never quite felt at peace at school, in my friendship groups, in myself. There was always a sense of discomfort and a craving for something more; I wanted to travel, to explore, to know other people and places and cultures. Half of me was rooted with the familiar and the other half wanted adventure.

This duality in nature sums up in simple terms how it feels to be a Gemini; always seeing both sides of a story, experiencing both bliss and agony within an hour or a day, the craving for stability and the longing for adventure. For a long time, these opposing energies played a battle in my mind that took me away from the present moment.

Then in my early twenties I discovered yoga.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, yoga is all about grounding into the body, into the present moment, into the space between black or white, home or away, comfort and discomfort. Into a place of calm and balance.

Through bringing this balance into my life, I was able to discover that there was a middle way. A place where I could venture off to explore, whilst finding a feeling of being at home within myself. A place where I could calm the fluctuations in my mind in order to find peace and presence.

It was then that I realised that some of the supposed Gemini traits didn’t always hold true.

Gemini likes to keep it light, to scatter their energy, to move from one thing to the next. Easily bored, they scratch the surface and then something or someone else grabs their attention and off they flit. Whilst on the surface some of this resonated, underneath I was seeking more.

And yet here I was; focused, determined, and driven by an inner fire that pushed me to chase my dreams, never giving up, always seeking to be the leader in my own life, to run my own show. It was then that I found out that my Moon was in Aries; the fiery, passionate, motivated, relentlessly determined leader who thrives on building communities in their uncomplicated and direct way. I wonder how I ended up being a yogipreneur who creates events and experiences that bring people together? :-)

Which might explain why all of my acquaintances describe me as calm and yet my partner says I’m anything but! He is the one that sees the fire, the impatience, the intolerance. Because yes, our moon sign also has its light and dark side.

There are many other elements that impact our personality, our inner experience and our outward nature but the final one I want to touch on here is…

Our Rising / Ascendant Sign…

Both Gemini (my Sun) and Aries (my Moon) are social, interactive, moving creatures. Lighthearted and playful, they seek pleasure and the fun things in life and yet there’s also a part of me that loves the depth, the mystery and the darkness.

A friend said to me recently, “I feel like there’s no hiding with you, you can see right through me”. This is my Scorpio rising; the passionate researcher who feels the energies of others so easily that it can be too intense for some. You will either want to come closer or go running for the hills at the thought of being so ‘seen’.
